Plymouth Sutton MP Linda Gilroy called by Commercial Wharf this past Saturday to drop in on the Devon Schools Sailing Association’s open day.
Linda met with instructors and was able to hear about the work they do and some of the challenges they face. She was also able to watch as the pupils readied their boats and set sail for Plymouth Sound.
Devon Schools Sailing Association is a "not for profit" voluntary organisation dedicated to the promotion and encouragement of sailing in schools. In addition to providing facilities for school children the organisation runs courses for all ages.
Tuition is given to all RYA levels of sailing and power boating. Seamanship and teamwork are emphasised and there is a strong safety policy in operation at all times.
Linda Gilroy said "Young people often get an unfair press – but these children were fantastic. Their confidence with the boats and in the water was remarkable".
"Projects like these provide a worthwhile and constructive outdoor occupation for children at the weekend. I will certainly do all that I can to support this group and I warmly encourage Plymouth parents and schools who may be interested to contact the group to find out more".
