   Plymouth's Economic Development

Drake's Circus

Plymouth is the fifteenth largest city in the country, the second largest city in the south-west and the largest city on the south coast.  The city is planning an increase in population from just under 250,000 to 300,000 or more by 2026. We have a plan for the built environment by world renowned town planner David Mackay and local economic aspects of the urban renaissance are being carried forward by our new City Development Company

 Plymouth's existing economic and employment 'hubs' around which much of this growth will occur, include:

  • Defence - Home to Devonport Naval Base and Dockyard, half the Royal Navy's fleet, significant elements of 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines, 29 Commando Royal Artillery, together with associated industries;
  • Marine Science - Location of the seven organisations of Plymouth Marine Science Partnership;
  • Business - Ranging from chewing gum makers Wrigley to luxury boat builders Princess Yachts;
  • Higher Education - 30,000 students, the fifth largest university population in the country;
  • Medical - Peninsula Medical and Dental Schools;
  • Creative Industries - including the biggest cluster of digital media companies outside the M25, one of only four art and design colleges in the country and the world-class TR2 rehearsal facilities;
  • Tourism  - including continental ferry terminal.

I am supporting Plymouth's development in the following ways:

  1. Meeting with key Ministers to fully engage the support and understanding of the Government  for Plymouth's growth strategy - including highlighting where the City's ambitions dovetail with the Government's own priorities.
  2. Working with key partners such as the South West Regional Development Agency and the City Development Company.
  3. Representing the City's major interests, such as defence, in Parliament.
  4. Ensuring the City has the necessary infrastructure to accompany growth - especially affordable housing.
  5. Supporting local regeneration projects such Drake's Circus and the East End Community Centre.
