Linda Gilroy was Labour & Co-operative Member of Parliament for Plymouth Sutton from 1997 to 2010.
Career
Linda was deputy director of Age Concern Scotland from 1972 to 1979 and then chair of the South West Gas Consumers' Council from 1979 until her election in 1997. She is a member of the Institute of Trading Standards.
Political Beginnings
Linda contested South East Cornwall in the General Election of 1992 and stood for Plymouth and East Devon in the European Elections of 1994. She won Plymouth Sutton in 1997 was was re-elected in 2001 and 2005.
In Parliament
Linda served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister for Local Government and the Regions from 2001 - 2005 and to the Minister for Science between 2008 - 2009. In addition she served as Assistant to the Regional Minister for the South West between 2009-2010.
During her time in Parliament Linda served on a number of committees, including the European Scrutiny Committee, the Strategic Arms Exports Committee and the Science & Technology Committee. Throughout the 2005 - 2010 Parliament she was a member of the House of Commons Defence Select Committee.
Linda was also active member of a number of All Party Groups including Water, Small Business, Reserve Forces, Parkinsons Disease, Digital Switchover and Warm Homes. She also participated in the Industry in Parliament Trust, the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme and the Royal Society's MP-Scientist Pairing Scheme and was a member of the Organization For Security and Co-Operation in Europe.
After Parliament
Linda takes an active interest in a range of national and local issues including, but not limited to: utilities (especially the water industry and fuel poverty), older people, defence, environment and climate change, enterprise and regeneration and affordable housing.
She married Bernard Gilroy in 1986 and likes theatre, walking and swimming.
