Campaign for a New Bak Holiday

I'm supporting travel agency Thomas Cook's campaign for a new bank holiday.

It is obvious to me from meetings with constituents that people are working harder than ever before, juggling both work and family commitments. An extra bank holiday would be a great way of improving the work life balance by giving people an extra day to spend with their family, get involved in their local community – or just to relax!

There are plenty of causes or occasions that are worth celebrating with a bank holiday – for instance honouring the commitment of our armed forces or encouraging volunteering and community involvement.

But I want to hear what people in Plymouth think - do you have a suggestion for a day, anniversary or event that should be marked by a new bank holiday?

I am very aware that in the prevailing economic climate many people are struggling with rising costs of living. That is why earlier this year I campaigned for the Chancellor to compensate those on the lowest incomes who would lose out through the abolition of the 10 pence tax rate. That is also why the Government took the decision to delay the recent rise in fuel duty. To address the Vehicle Excise Duty specifically, these changes are not designed to penalise those who cannot afford a low tax car - rather, they provide incentives for motorists who wish to switch to the most fuel efficient cars and reward drivers of the cleanest cars. They will also encourage manufacturers to bring forward cleaner models and support the development of the low carbon car market. Three out of four car purchases are 2nd hand so it is important to encourage green buying decisions in the 2nd hand market too. Of the poorest 20% of households, approximately 55% do not own a car. Those that do tend to have cars registered before 2001. These pre-2001 cars make up roughly a third of the cars on the road and are not subject to graduated VED based on CO2 emissions, but rather engine size. All in all for the above reasons, I do support the changes to Vehicle Excise Duty. Linda

I was unable to find your view of the backdated car tax rises. Can you tell us if you support the government's decision to penalise those who cannot afford a new low-tax car? Regards, Simon.

My suggestions:- Last Monday in October or 1st Monday in November - could tie in with Autumn half term week, which would particularly help people with school children i.e only having to find child care for 4 days instead of 5. End of February or as near to Valentine's Day as possible to celebrate the Day - could serve as world peace/tolerance day - we could all then be whisked off to Venice or somewhere nice! Well we can all dream can't we!!! Last Monday in June - that could tie in with honouring our Armed Forces, especially as Veterans Day (27th June)/weekend is end of June Janet
