   Science & Technology Select Committee

Linda was a member of the Science & Technology Select Committee from February 2007 until October 2007, when it was disbanded.

The job of the Committee was to scrutinise the activities of the Government Office of Science & Innovation, which was a part of the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI). In July 2007, the DTI was abolished, and its remit allocated between two new departments -  that of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS).

During the time in which Linda was a member, the investigations undertaken by the Committee included:

  • Scientific Developments Relating to the Abortion Act.
  • The Funding of Science & Discovery Centres.
  • Investigating the Oceans.
  • International Policies and Activities of Research Councils.
  • 2007: A Space Policy.

The reports into Science & Discovery Centre and Investigating the Oceans were particular relevant to Plymouth, given the city's fast growing reputation as a centre of excellence for marine sciences.
