   Standing Up For Devonport

Plymouth Sutton MP Linda Gilroy today lead a delegation of trades union representatives from the Dockyard to meet with Armed Forces Minister Bob Ainsworth MP.

Discussions focused on the way in which repair and refit work on surface vessels helps to maintain technical skills vital to Devonport’s strategic role in refitting nuclear submarines.

This is latest stage in Linda Gilroy’s long running campaign to secure a prosperous and stable long term future for the yard. Two years ago, Linda Gilroy formed the Devonport Strategy Group, bringing together local politicians with representatives from Babcock DML, the Royal Navy and the local community to ensure the interests of the Dockyard and Naval Base were represented in the fast changing defence world.

She has already met with Mr Ainsworth twice previously and raised the issue with Gordon Brown in their first meeting after he became Prime Minister.

Over the next few weeks, Linda will not only be holding meetings with the new Minister for Defence Equipment and Support, Baroness Taylor, but will also be taking her case to cabinet level, by meeting with Andy Burnham MP, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

Linda Gilroy said “It is vital that Ministers understand not only the importance of maintaining technical expertise but also what it takes to hold this together. We have a highly skilled workforce with a strong record and a huge amount to offer”.
