Des Browne Defence Secretary today announced increased defence spending, including two new aircraft carriers, and confirmed that all three naval bases
would be needed in future.
Linda Gilroy, present throughout debate, asked for confirmation that the Dockyard would have a role in surface shipbuilding. “I was delighted at the
confirmation that Devonport has a future. We have such a fantastic service to offer, but I am sure that everyone watching will have seen the Minister refer to some reductions in
staffing. The fight therefore goes on, and one of the most important elements of
this is to secure a commitment to surface ship work. This is something I will keep working at”.
The Minister praised Mrs Gilroy for her efforts on behalf of the Dockyard noting the way she had conducted the campaign and fought for her local constituency.
“It was nice of Des to make those comments, but the campaign has not just been my efforts, but those of so many people throughout the City and I pay tribute to their work and dedication. I would
also warn them that the battle maybe won, but we do need to fight on to make sure any losses locally are the absolute minimum and that we protect the work that we need.”
