Plymouth Sutton MP Linda Gilroy has been selected as the Labour and Co-operative Party candidate for the new constituency of Plymouth Sutton and Devonport.
“I am delighted at the opportunity now given me”, she said “I am sure that Gordon Brown will make an excellent Prime Minister and the General Election is a long way off, but it is great to have the confidence of the local Party and I look forward to the challenge of fighting for a new seat, whenever the election comes”.
The new seat which will be named Plymouth Sutton and Devonport will include the whole of the current Devonport Ward, which is currently mainly within Devonport Constituency. Devonport Constituency will be renamed Moor View and Ham Ward (which sits within both parliamentary constituencies) will be wholly within Moor View in future.
Sutton and Devonport Labour Party Chair, Councillor Bill Stevens said “Unlike the Conservatives who failed to agree who to support when they tried to select a suitable candidate, Linda received the whole hearted support of the constituency. We know how hard she works and we know that she puts Plymouth first. This makes her our ideal candidate and I hope that the electors of Plymouth Sutton and Devonport will agree with us”
Linda Gilroy was first elected to serve as MP for Plymouth Sutton in 1997 and recently celebrated 10 years as the constituency’s MP.
